Located in downtown Anchorage, Kumin
Associates, Inc. (KAI) is an architecture, planning and interior
design firm with over 30 years experience in all regions of Alaska.
The firm works in the Pacific Northwest, the Russian Far East,
Greenland and in Antarctica as well. Now one of Alaska's most
diverse architectural firms, the in-house team includes 12
registered architects supported by intern architects, drafters,
interior designers and administrative staff. Services include
facility programming, master-planning for sites and buildings,
architecture and interior design and construction management. The
firm enjoys challenges and is routinely takes on “forensic”
assignments, searching for solutions to difficult problems.
KAI’s experience covers a broad range
of project type and location. Notable projects include the
International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks, Nicholas Joseph Begich Middle and Denali Elementary
Schools in Anchorage and over fifty-five schools in every region of
Alaska, the Bill Sheffield Rail Depot at the Ted Stevens Anchorage
International Airport and twenty-seven different projects for the
National Science Foundation in Antarctica.
Current KAI Alaskan projects range
over the entire state, from Ketchikan in the south, to Toolik Camp
on the North Slope, King Cove in the Aleutians and the new Norton
Sound Regional Hospital on the Bering Peninsula. Current projects
in Anchorage include Bartlett High School Remodel Phases III – IV,
and the Anchorage Museum Expansion.
The firm was an early proponent of
alternate delivery methods such as design / build, and continues to
find ways to deliver projects that meet owners’ expectations with a
minimum of drama.
KAI has been recognized, for outstanding design,
by such groups as the American Institute of Architects, the American
Association of School Administrators, The Governors Committee for
Employment of the Handicapped, and the U.S. Department of Defense.
Awards have focused on overall design excellence as well as energy
efficiency, accessibility, and other innovative responses to design
issues. Projects include a broad range of facility types – hotels,
parking facilities, fisheries industry, research centers, industrial
buildings, schools, office buildings, skilled care facilities,
community centers, multi-family housing, senior housing, and fire
stations. These projects encompass new, remodeled, and renovated
