Design Excellence

in Alaska

History

Located in downtown Anchorage, Kumin Associates, Inc. (KAI) is an architecture, planning and interior design firm with over 30 years experience in all regions of Alaska.  The firm works in the Pacific Northwest, the Russian Far East, Greenland and in Antarctica as well.  Now one of Alaska's most diverse architectural firms, the in-house team includes 12 registered architects supported by intern architects, drafters, interior designers and administrative staff.  Services include facility programming, master-planning for sites and buildings, architecture and interior design and construction management.  The firm enjoys challenges and is routinely takes on “forensic” assignments, searching for solutions to difficult problems.

KAI’s experience covers a broad range of project type and location.  Notable projects include the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Nicholas Joseph Begich Middle and Denali Elementary Schools in Anchorage and over fifty-five schools in every region of Alaska, the Bill Sheffield Rail Depot at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and twenty-seven different projects for the National Science Foundation in Antarctica.

Current KAI Alaskan projects range over the entire state, from Ketchikan in the south, to Toolik Camp on the North Slope, King Cove in the Aleutians and the new Norton Sound Regional Hospital on the Bering Peninsula.  Current projects in Anchorage include Bartlett High School Remodel Phases III – IV, and the Anchorage Museum Expansion.

The firm was an early proponent of alternate delivery methods such as design / build, and continues to find ways to deliver projects that meet owners’ expectations with a minimum of drama.
